I want to dedicate this International Women’s Day to Ruan Lingyu 阮玲玉. Born in 1910, she was a prominent silent film star during the golden age of Shanghai cinema. Her career ended in tragedy when she took her own life March 8, 1935. Her role in the film New Women is special as Ruan Lingyu and the character in the film from which the film is based on, Ai Xia, are icons of changing society for women during this time period.
